To Take a Treasure Fleet

Image
Maria Cristina offered Freddy another cup of tea and smiled at him. "We can never thank you enough, Freddy and friends. You saved us." Her husband, Governor Davila, nodded gravely. "Indeed. While my brave Musketeers would have sold their lives dearly, it was only a matter of time before they would have been overwhelmed. Without your intervention, even now, I would be in chains. Or worse.”      Davila suddenly stood up, rattling the fine china that adorned the large, richly adorned round table. The shock of his near escape seemed to be passing. His eyes burned with fury as he slapped one hand down on the table, hard, once again rattling china. "This will not stand sir, this will not stand! To assault me in my own abode! To do harm to my servants! To violate the Constitution of the Republic! The oligarchs have gone too far this time! We must take action. This will not stand!"     Maria Cristina laid a calming hand on her husband's arm. F...

Viva la Revolution!

"Well, the Mithran nuns seem to have driven them off," Dakhir reported, lowering his hands and letting the spell fade. From far down the boulevard, he could see flashes of white light, far away, but even at this distance, so bright it was painful to look at directly.  "The ones that are still alive anyway you cooked so many of them it smells like a fried chicken buffet over by the river," Ricmo replied, impressed.  "Firing cannon on an unarmed civilian crowd, I am not shedding any tears for them," Freddy replied grimly. "They killed scores of unarmed men, women and children before we interfered." "The interference was certainly moral," Tello agreed. "However, I wonder what we have interfered IN exactly." A swirling gale announced Whisperleaf's arrival. He was difficult to see when he took the form of air, but there was enough dust and smoke around to outline the ten-foot tall conical whirlwind that was Whisperleaf. The s...

Black Alice’s Door

Image
“Oh the door been misbehaving again has it? Aye it does that occasionally. Got a will o it’s own that door.” BlackJack Macafetty  greeted them from behind his bar, polishing one of his many mugs, the motion completely ingrained and on autopilot from years of repetition. He appeared almost exactly as they had left him, three months ago when the Lady Jezebel had sailed from the great metropolis of Haven Town and into the wilds of the Northern Reach. “So you lot aren’t actually back in Haven Towne at all then?” “No?” Dakhir replied bemusedly. “We’re at least a thousand leagues away in a town called Puerto Lejos . Or at least I think we are?”. BlackJack looked blank at the name of the town. “Not familiar with Puerto Lejos, so must be quite a ways away.” “Far into the Northern Reach. We were just walking down the Main Street and we saw the door to this Inn. How is that possible?” Dakhir asked. BlackJack shrugged.  “Magic. Black Alice’s magic. Or at least my da said it all started...

The Thousand Isles - Seeing a Lady about a ghost

"Did you bring the chicken?" asked Mambo Grace. Wordlessly Dakhir produced the gilded cage containing one (1) live and extremely unhappy chicken. The cage had originally held a songbird of some kind, but Dakhir had been in a hurry for something to put the chicken in to make it stop pecking him, so the songbird had been granted freedom. His family had prepared him for many things, mostly exceedingly dark things, but poultry transportation was not one them. Not exactly their forte. Mambo Grace didn't ask questions about the cage  though, she just placed it on her worktable next to a wicked looking dagger, on a grooved stone counter. Those grooves were clearly designed to prevent liquid from spilling over the floor. Dakhir had seen grooves like that before. He also noted the stone washbowl full of clean water next to the worktable. The pattern fell into place. He did not give the chicken high odds of surviving the night. The upstairs at Mambo Grace's house was packed, ...

The Thousand Isles - Turtle Magic

Image
"Don't hit him Sturg! He doesn't look like he's with those crazy paladins!" called out Dakhir. The Sturg hesitated. In his opinion strange creatures that came bursting suddenly into his room unannounced shouldn't complain when he hit them. Admittedly this particular strange creature, wild eyed and frantic though it may be, didn't seem very threatening.  Also it had a shell. The Strug approved of shells. He had one himself and it was very useful. His armor not only kept the weapons and claws of his enemies away but it also kept the people away.  As Dakhir continued to glare at him, and the stranger continued to not attack anyone, The Sturg slowly lowered his sword.   The party stared in awe at the stranger, momentarily forgetting the dire strait they were in, "My word" said Whisperleaf wonderingly. "I do believe that's a Tortle! I've never actually seen one, thought they were myths. How marvelous!" "It looks like a big wal...
